CodeLook has two main functions, looking up partial telephone
numbers to find the locality and tariff band, and looking up localities to find the code. It effectively replaces the BT Phone
Book Companion that serves the same purpose in book format (but does not use the same source material!). This database is
updated approximately every one or two weeks.
The partial telephone number can be national, international. mobile, premium, a service or indirect code. It may be a combined indirect code and partial number. For UK geographic telephone numbers, CodeLook can distinguish whether calls between two areas are local or national tariff band, if you specify your own telephone code. Once a telephone code has been found, next and previous buttons allow scrolling through the database. To protect the web server, the number of lookups is limited in each session. The Windows version available to members does not have any limit. Operator: this is operator to whom the number range is allocated by Ofcom, but due to porting of numbers between operators, it is not necessarily the operator to whom the user pays their bill. Tariff Band/Tariff Code: this indicates the tariff band (in brackets) to which this number range has been allocated for end user billing purposes by BT. The actual cost of calling this tariff band from a BT, Virgin Media (Telewest or NTL) residential line can be checked at Residential Telephone Tariffs - Part 1. If you using a different operator to make calls, you need to look them up on the Residential Index page. Some non-geographic tariff bands show an indicative cost in pence per minute, this is what BT charges residential users for calls to this band and includes VAT, but note that other operators may charge more than BT, sometimes up to double. If two or three prices are shown, these are usually the weekend/cheap/peak charge bands, but directory enquiries (DQ) numbers have a lot of charging permutations, more details of which can be found in the full tariff comparison tables.
