Operators and Notes

Tariffs Version 124 - 30th June 2008
Not for commercial publication or use.

Note: all business prices in the notes are exclusive of VAT, residential prices are generally inclusive of VAT, unless otherwise specified.

Direct Connections   Direct connect refers to calls made via the network from which the connection is rented, usually directly wired but sometimes wireless (BT, cable TV).
Indirect Connections   Indirect connection is only available to BT direct connect users, who dial a code to route the call indirectly via another carrier, most operators offer a dialler box that dials the code automatically. See CPS and Wholesale below.
CPS   Carrier Pre Selection allows calls to be routed automatically to the another carrier from BT lines without dialling a code or using dialler box. Some calls (premium in particular) may be cheaper via BT so dial 1280 first.
Wholesale   BT sells line wholesale to other licensed operators who are can charge line rental as well as calls, so there no BT bill. Uusually combined with CPS.
Premium Connections   Several services collect payment for international calls by using revenue share premium numbers (including national rate and personal numbers). With these, charging starts when the first call is answered, so you pay to dial and listen to ringing or busy.
VoIP and PC Only VoIP

Voice over Internet calls require a broadband internet connection, either ADSL over a telephone line or a cable modem. PC only services use PC software, a sound card and PC headset to make telephone calls, the PC must remain powered on to receive calls.
Most VoIP services provide a telephone adaptor, or it might be built into an ADSL or cable modem already, allowing a normal telephone to be used for calls. Or you can buy VoIP telephones, which are widely used by businesses for cabling simplicity.
Web Page   Web page calls use a web browser to set-up a call between two telephones (landline or mobile), causing both telephones to ring and be connected. Note calls are not made using the PC, but with normal telephones.
International Calls   Different operators may place certain countries in different bands to those used by BT. The international prices should therefore be treated as approximate in such cases. These tables usually show the tariff for the first named country.
Call Set-up and Minimum Charges

Telephone calls may be charged in many different ways. Historically, BT charged calls in meter units with varying call duration for each fixed priced unit. About 30 years ago BT changed to per second billing, with each call having a minimum charge.
The past few years has seen calls charged both by length and with a call set-up or connection charge, to which BT changed in 2006. To simplify charging, many operators round the call length, typically up to the nearest minute, sometimes 6 or 10 seconds.
These tariffs tables show call set-up charges and minimum call costs separately for inland (01/02/03), mobile (075/077/078/079), international (00) and other (070/076/08/09) calls. Usually there is either a set-up charge or a minimum charge.
The minimum call seconds is also shown, which is usually the duration rounding interval, so calls are rounded up to this period for charging.
Call Periods - BT residential   Standard (daytime/peak) period is 6am to 6pm. Cheap (evening/night) period is 6pm to 6am. Weekend period is midnight Friday to midnight Sunday. If no price is shown for weekends, the Standard and Cheap prices apply seven days a week.
Call Periods - BT business   Standard (daytime/peak) period is 7am to 7pm. Cheap (evening/night) period is 7pm to 7am. Weekend period is midnight Friday to midnight Sunday. If no price is shown for weekends, the Standard and Cheap prices apply seven days a week.
Call Periods - other operators, unless stated   Standard (daytime/peak) period is 8am to 6pm. Cheap (evening/night) period is 6pm to 8am. Weekend period is midnight Friday to midnight Sunday. If no price is shown for weekends, the Standard and Cheap prices apply seven days a week.
Tariff Dates

Dates in this table show when tariffs were last checked if the tariffs are older than three months, in addition to when the tariffs became effective.
This typically means the operator has emailed stating there are no changes this month, or the web page is unchanged. Note that some operators may not keep their web site up to date, and worse, don't date their tariffs either.
Operator Assistance Calls   Calls made via the BT operator are charged at about the same price (or slightly higher) as direct dialled calls, but with a higher minimum charge. A facility fee of £1.53 may be charged. Some cable companies may charge dramatically more than BT!
Payment by Direct Debit   Most telephone packages are paid in arrears, quarterly for BT and monthly for most other operators. Payment is usually by direct debit, with payment by other means attracting an additonal cost of up to £4.50 per bill.
NTS - Number Translation Service

Number Translation Service refers to calls to non-geographic numbers (starting with 07, 08, 09, such as 07000, 0845, 0870, etc). Calls to such numbers are effectively translated for delivery to 'hidden' geographic numbers.
Most operators have differing prices for geographic and NTS calls, the latter often being more expensive due to payments being made to the NTS operator (which may kick back money to the whoever rents the number.
Location Independent (g21)   The G21 charge band applies to 055 corporate numbers, 056 voice over internet and 03xx UK wide numbers. Although BT publishes separate G21 prices, BT Together and Business Plan charge G21 calls the same as 01/02 calls, including capped or free options.
Timeline (speaking clock)   Calls to 123 are charged by BT at Fixed Fee 6 rate (30p)
Directory Enquiries

From 10th December 2002, competition was introduced for directory enquiry calls using dozens of new 118 prefixed numbers. BT has 70 different price bands for the different competing services, but not all are used, yet.
dq1 to 13, dq39, dq43 and dq61 are priced per minute with a normal 5p minimum charge. dq14 to 22, dq50, dq57 to 59, dq62 and dq66 are fixed cost per call.
dq23 to 30, dq36 to 38, dq41, dq42 and dq44 to 47, dq52 to 56, dq60, dq64 and 65, dq68 to 70, are both a fixed cost and a per minute cost. dq31 to 35, dq40, dq48, dq49, dq51 and dq67 are a fixed cost for the first minute and a cost for extra minutes.
